Great location
Lancaster city is rich in history and culture, with Lancaster Castle, shops, cafés, bars, and theatres. It’s conveniently located in the centre of the UK. Road and rail links give you easy and affordable access to explore the metropolitan cities of London, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Liverpool etc. There’s also magnificent and dramatic countryside and coast to discover on the doorstep, including the famous Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Forest of Bowland, Morecambe seaside, and Blackpool.

Three academic terms
Lancaster follows what we in the US call the "quarter system," with three academic terms – one before Christmas, and two after. You can choose from three study combinations:
  • Michaelmas term (October - December), called "fall" in this Gustavus system. Earn 3.0 Gustavus course units from Lancaster (see "Fall Semester" below).
  • Lent & Summer terms (January - June), called "spring" in this Gustavus system. Earn 4.0 to 5.0 Gustavus course units.
  • Full academic year (October to June), called "academic year" in this Gustavus system. Earn 7.5 to 8.0 Gustavus course units.
Fall Semester ("Michaelmas Term"). Because of the arrangement of the terms, students who study at Lancaster in the fall may earn slightly less credit than normal for a semester at Gustavus, though you can also add up to 1.0 Gustavus course units of independent study completed with a Gustavus professor. Imagine:
  • If you're a theatre student, build a course around going to the theatre across the UK and then analyzing the production choices, acting, direction, scenic elements, costuming, etc.
  • If you're studying sociology/anthropology, perhaps you can pursue an ethnographic research project with UK residents.
  • If you're an economics major, you can use the wonderful collections at the Lancaster University libraries to write a significant independent research paper on economics policy in the UK.
  • etc.: The sky's the limit!
Course levels at Lancaster
Like Gustavus, Lancaster has three course levels:
  • 100 – first year
  • 200 – second year
  • 300 – third or final year
Unique collegiate residential system
Lancaster is one of a small number of leading UK universities to operate a residential community structure where all students and staff join a college. They are the focus of social scenes, support, events, and activities and provide a sense of belonging. (Note: The cost shown in the budget sheets linked above is for a single room with en suite bathroom, but it is the lowest-cost option in that category.) See the video below for details and student testimonials about the residential colleges.

Module Guide
Look for course modules (what we just call "courses" in the US; in the UK, the "course" is the entire degree program that leads to the bachelor's, master's or other degree).
