Program Description:
The Horton Global Scholars Program is a new scholarship program for the 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 academic years. In each academic year, one Gustavus student will receive a scholarship of $3000 to participate in a semester-length international study away program.

About Horton Inc.
Horton Inc., a donor to the Minnesota Private College Fund for 55 years, is a premium provider of engine-cooling solutions worldwide. Located in Roseville, Minnesota, the company manufactures and markets fan drives, fans, and related components in OEM applications and aftermarket segments globally. With 60 years of industry experience, Horton Inc. is committed to service, reliability, innovation, and the environment. This new gift to establish the Horton Global Scholars Program makes Horton Inc. one of the Minnesota Private College Fund’s largest donors.

Scholarship Criteria
  • Student must be a U.S. domestic student (citizen or permanent resident).
  • Student must be a business-related, informational technology, physical sciences, or math major.
  • Study away program must be a semester-long program.
  • Student must have demonstrated unmet financial need.
  • Student must be eligible to participate in campus study away programs (meaning they are at a minimum GPA requirement and are not on probation).
  • Student must submit a short essay as part of the application.
  • Recipient is required to write an exit essay about their experience and a thank you to Horton Inc.
Application Process
Interested students may begin by applying for this scholarship program. Once selected, the recipient will be expected to complete the study away program application quickly (if it has not already been completed). Please note that the study away program's application has a $70 nonrefundable application fee. The Horton Scholar will be expected to pay the application fee. However, the Scholar may choose, if they need to do so, to defer payment of the usual $500 program deposit due after acceptance to the specific study away program to final program billing (this allows the scholarship and other sources of aid to help pay both the deposit and the final program billing).

*If you are also applying to the Ginger Haddorff or Dean Family scholarships, you may run into issues opening a Horton application. If that is the case, please contact Justin Kader.

Interested students who would like program advising are encouraged to follow the steps given in the Study Away advising webpage.

The Gilman Scholarship
If you are applying for the Horton award and you also receive a Pell Grant in your Gustavus financial aid package, please also consider applying for the federal Gilman Scholarship, which could award up to $5000 in additional funding.
