For Gustavus Adolphus students: IFSA uses semester credits. Each GAC unit = 4 semester credits. Thus, some IFSA courses, which are worth 3 semester credits each, are worth 0.75 GAC units. Be sure to discuss the irregular unit totals with your advisors as you select courses.

Language study. Gustavus students who spend an academic year at SOAS may meet the Gustavus language requirement with one of many languages not offered on the Gustavus campus. All language modules are taught over one year, so January starters you must have prior knowledge of the language in order to join the class. Unfortunately, SOAS does not offer absolute beginner language classes in January. Students with the relevant experience are allowed to join non-beginners language classes, but you must either take a placement test or discuss your level with the module convenor once you arrive at SOAS. The 15-UK-credit modules are normally not language acquisition courses, but language use, i.e. literature, drama. Students cannot take more than one beginners language at a time.

For more on this and other academic rules at SOAS, plus descriptions of courses on offer, look at the SOAS information for study abroad students.
