Program Description:
Program Description:

Enhance your resume, explore career interests, and broaden your horizons in one of the most fascinating countries in the world. New Zealand has exceptional appeal for adventure-seekers and culture vultures alike. Whether you prefer to admire the scenes from Lord of the Rings on a screen or you’d hike hours or even days to visit them in person, New Zealand is an amazing backdrop to your intern abroad experience. You’ll likely be placed and live in Wellington, considered the “San Francisco” of New Zealand – albeit perhaps a bit more quaint and charming.

Important Gustavus Credit Info

Only the 12-week model is open to Gustavus participants, as the 8-week model is too short to earn Gustavus credit.

Note, too, that the full load in a CISabroad Internship is 3 Gustavus units. While this is the minimum course load to be considered enrolled full-time at Gustavus, it is NOT a sufficient course load for those who receive Minnesota state grants in their financial aid package, and it is also not a sufficient load to remain on track for graduating on time. For those reasons, most students will want to add an additional 1-unit independent study course with a Gustavus professor, or to add the combination of the 0.5-unit online course offered to all study away students in non-Gustavus programs (“Engaging Cultural Difference”) and an additional 0.5-unit independent study course.

Because enrolled Gustavus students will be seeking academic credit, there is an additional $800 charge (reflected in the budget sheet shown here) for internship course enrollment at Plymouth State University, the school of record for CISabroad internships.

Limit on Career-Related Credits in the Degree. Note that students are permitted to count a maximum of 4 course credits of career-related experiential education toward graduation requirements at Gustavus. (This experience counts as 3 credits on its own.) This maximum includes: Career Exploration (268), semester or summer Academic Internships (368), Orientation to Teaching (EDU-268), and Student Teaching (EDU-392, 394, 395, 396). Additional credits (beyond the maximum of four) can be taken as a course audit (standard tuition applies) but would not be counted toward graduation. Applying Academic Internship credit towards a major is determined by the academic department.

Housing Deposit. In addition to the costs shown in the budget, participants will pay a refundable $500 housing deposit. The deposit may be fully or partially refunded after departure depending on the state of the housing after students leave.
