Program Description:
Program Description:
Study Race, Ethnicity, and Identities in Colombia.

In this program, you’ll study race and identity through the Afro-Colombian lens. The program’s curriculum, developed in consultation with Howard University, allows you to examine representations of race and ethnicity in Colombia, improve your Spanish, and live with Colombian roommates. You’ll use the Cali's rich backdrop of diversity as your springboard from which to examine the sociopolitical, economic, artistic, and historical representations of race in all of Afro-Colombia.

Highlights:
  • Core courses taught in English
  • Pre-semester Spanish Intensive to help you adjust to your new life abroad
  • Group excursions outside of Cali to explore core concepts from different locales
  • Traveling Seminar
  • No language prerequisite, but intermediate and advanced Spanish students can directly enroll in university electives

For Gustavus Adolphus students: CET uses semester credits. Each GAC unit = 4 semester credits. Thus, some CET courses, which are worth 3 semester credits each, are worth 0.75 GAC units. Be sure to discuss the irregular unit totals with your advisors as you select courses.

Language study: Because the program offers both an initial, intensive course in Spanish and a semester-length course that followsw, it may be possible to fulfill the Gustavus language requirement for graduation during the semester in this program. Consult the Registrar's Office to explore this option.

Direct enrollment option: Students with intermediate to advanced skills in Spanish may directly enroll in one to three elective courses at the host university. If you plan to direct-enroll, you should also have a language recommendation completed. Ask the Study Away Program Coordinator for more information.
