The course will focus on performance of orchestral and Jazz repertoire in Malaysia and Singapore with an emphasis on American Orchestral Music, American Jazz Tradition, and the fusion of these two mediums.

  • The companion course will include a brief look at the the long history of the countries that shape the current rich cultural diversity, and the current socio-economic issues in Malaysia and Singapore.
  • The tour will include performances at schools where students will have the opportunity for musical exchanges with Singaporian and Malaysian students and teachers.
Overview
Gustavus Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble in Malaysia and Singapore focuses on the aural study and performance of orchestral and Jazz repertoire with an emphasis on American Orchestral Music, American Jazz Tradition, and the fusion of these two mediums.  Performances will be presented to several audiences in Malaysia and Singapore. The companion course, taught on campus by Steve Mellema, will include a brief look at the the long history of the countries that shape the current rich cultural diversity, and the current socio-economic issues in Malaysia and Singapore. In addition to the extensive rehearsal study and preparation necessary for the performances, students will attend lectures, participate in discussion, and complete reflective essays.

Faculty Leaders
Ruth LinRuth Lin, Associate Professor, Conductor of the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra in Music and Music Ensembles
Dr. Ruth Lin has been the Director of the Symphony Orchestra at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter Minnesota since 2010. She is the recipient of the 2018 Master Teacher School Orchestra award from the Minnesota String & Orchestra Teachers Association. The Symphony Orchestra is proud to be one of the finalists for the 2015 American Prize in the College/University division and it was featured at the 2016 Minnesota Music Educators Association conference. In addition to conducting the Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Lin also teaches classes in Conducting, Music Theory, Arranging, and a First Term Seminar in Film Music.

Dave Stamps
Dave Stamps, Director of Jazz Studies and an Assistant Professor of Music
An active trombonist and composer/arranger, Dave has performed with/written for the Colorado Jazz Orchestra, Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Ninth+Lincoln Jazz Orchestra, Chuck Owen & the Jazz Surge, Jim Widner Big Band, Wil Swindler's Elevenet, and Luiza Zan, among others. He has performed all over the United States as well as Canada, Mexico, Peru, and Europe, including the Montreax Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz à Vienne, and Festival Jazz en Lima.

Eligibility
Students must be in either the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra or Jazz Ensemble and meet the general study away requirements.

Application Deadline
Students must complete the online application by May 1, 2019. 

Entry visas and passports
US citizens may enter Malaysia and Singapore visa free for short stays. All students who are not U.S. citizens should contact Bryan Messerly to check about possible additional visa needs. All program participants must have a passport that is valid through at least July 31, 2020, by the start of Fall 2019 semester.
